Preparing for further education, employment and independent living is the overall goal of special education. The problem we have right now are the options that are available. With the economy down, job cuts still happening and the recovery going to take years…things do not look good for our children with disabilities to become productive members of society anytime soon. How do I know this? I experience it everyday while trying to brainstorm about other options for my brother, who is 31 with Down Syndrome.
In my search for the right answer, I’ve also battle my own disability issues with my daughter who had an almost fatal seizure. She is in recovery now and by discovering how to make her well, I’ve also discovered how to help my brother.
