We know we are doing something right when we get feedback from our readers. This afternoon we sent out an invite to our readers to learn more about how we’re helping the WHOLE family, not only just IEP issues.

We made it very clear that we do not feel that the IEP document is the only answer to your child’s education and life success.

We know that there is much more to life than IEP issues. There are concerns of siblings, finances, health and much more.

Ignoring these pieces of a family and planning IEP goals with blinders on would be irresponsible!

We have a team of over 100 families working together on improving their child’s education, their whole family health and many are also improving their finances by working at home with us.

This makes some people MAD!

They would rather live in a world of fighting IEP goals, spending all your energy on negotiating an extra 30 minutes of speech therapy and hoping that everything turns out o.k. at age 22.

Reality will hit these “advocates” someday. They will realize that being a support to the whole family and offering solutions and ideas to meet the needs of the whole family is a great way to experience success.

We’re proud of the parents we work with who are earning more by helping other families and working on our team. We’re simply creating more advocates, more healthy families and more educated children with disabilities while acknowledging the big picture and dreaming big!

Have questions about what we’re doing? Have an opinion? Feel free to share!

Pssst…do you want to know who was the most mad of all? Other advocates who read our newsletter and are advocating for you in “old school” fashion! They are appalled that I would combine helping families with IEP issues with help in other areas of their lives. Hey! IEPs are supposed to be about preparing for a great life!

Special Education is Not about the Law!

How is it that for the past 15 years I’ve been able to help families with special needs children with IEP’s, yet I’ve never taken a law class in my life.

Together I’ve helped families obtain millions of dollars of education, but I’ve only used the same 5 quotes from IDEA.

Let’s get real. 99% of school districts will do what is required by the law – that’s just not what you are looking for. You want more than “appropriate” for your child. You want the icing on the cake. You want the skills your child needs to make it in life, not just to survive.

Most special education negotiations that I’ve encountered are about taking your child’s education to the next level -from survival to success.

Unfortunately, with the current budget issues it seems everyone has reverted into survival mode and IEP decisions are being made based on budget issues more than ever.

This turn of events has turned our services here at Precision Education upside down. Many of you have already noticed a change in how our services are being offered. You’re wondering if we’ve jumped ship and are not returning to advocacy – when in reality it’s exactly the opposite.

It’s time we look at the bigger picture of the special needs family. Not the band-aid fix of 20 extra minutes of speech therapy in school. What does your family REALLY need for your child and home to be successful?

Being a two-fold special needs family (my brother & my daughter have special needs) I live this life everyday with you. I’ve conquered a mission to bring our family out of survival mode and into success mode.

Now our family, not just me, but our whole family – is determined to help other families reach to the next level of success in their lives.

The absolute best part of this change in services to help you reach success in your family – I’ve been able to lower IEP hourly consulting rates to – ZERO.

If you’re determined to reach a better level of education while helping your family improve in more ways than you can imagine through becoming part of the bigger picture, schedule your 1:1 phone consult with me we’ll go over the details!

It’s March and unless you are feeling lucky, you probably don’t want to delay much longer when it comes to reviewing your child’s IEP for next year. Are the goals appropriate, has all data been collected, have all placements been viewed for next year, is the accommodation page accurate, are support services in order? Yikes! There’s a lot of details to wrap up and we all know that after spring break…it just gets crazier!

To make your decision a little easier that the time is now to get IEP help, we are again offering a special in March to fit IEP consulting into your household budget by partnering with Shaklee.

As a nationwide speaker on IEP issues, I know the importance of taking care of the details within the paperwork.
As a mom of a child who is recovering from epilepsy and heavy metal toxins, I know the importance of taking care of family!
As a sister of an adult with Down syndrome, I know the importance of helping adults with disabilities make a quality life.

When you purchase a Get Clean Starter Kit through Shaklee you are:

1. Choosing green, heavy metal free, pesticide free, carcinogen free, SAFE products that WORK for your home. Shaklee was key to my daughter’s recovery!

2. You are supporting adults with disabilities. Precision Education is now helping families with disabilities and adults with disabilities create income through a Shakee business at home! You are helping create a quality of life we are confident you would want for your children in the future.

3. You are receiving quality IEP help for your child. We’ll go through issues, concerns and all the details mentioned above in assuring your child wraps up this year effectively and starts of next year as smoothly as possible.

HOW IT WORKS:

For the month of March, you can receive a 90 minute free IEP consult by purchasing a Get Clean Starter Kit through Shaklee.
Your price: $170 plus S/H & Tax
Plus, you will receive 15% off of all of your Shaklee purchases for one year.
Why Shaklee? Shaklee products are guaranteed SAFE. No heavy metals, carcinogens, or pesticides present and there are over 350 tests on every ingredient to assure safety & quality.

You love your child with special needs. You love when they experience triumphs in all areas of life. You love when the IEP team is working well together. You love when you have a great parent input statement for the IEP meeting. You love when it simply all comes together.

Sometime you could use a little help getting there. A little help in finding the right words to express your concerns. A little help in reviewing IEP goals to see if you should suggest anything different. A little help understanding what data you should be receiving. A little help when deciding what classrooms/placement to look at next year.

For the next two weeks, a little help will cost less with Precision Education & Catherine Whitcher, M.Ed.

Starting today through the end of February, all new clients (and families we haven’t worked with in over one year) can receive an initial IEP mini-consult $125.

However, like all good deals there is a catch! It’s a good catch…I promise!

Do to spreading the love and support of adults with disabilities and entrepreneurship, the only way to receive this reduced fee is to purchase $125 at http://www.robertbagdonas.myshaklee.com

Your purchase helps Robert, which in turn supports a bigger picture of independence of adults with disabilities, and also results in you receiving help for your child and navigating the special education system for a better future. It’s a WiN/WIN!

What you receive during your special education consult:

1. 90 minutes by phone (great for anyone around the U.S.!) or in person (Shorewood, IL area) with Catherine Whitcher, M.Ed

2. A review of your child’s IEP, 7 critical components of the IEP discussed in full.

3. A written recap of our meeting with suggested next steps/IEP input sent to you within 3 days.

4. Access to “current client rates” for one year.

5. Your choice of $125 worth of product from http://www.robertbagdonas.myshaklee.com

How to make this happen?

1. Go to http://www.robertbagdonas.myshaklee.com and make your purchase online OR simply make your shopping list and we’ll complete your order for you over the phone.

2. Call (815) 302-1273 and ask for Catherine: Let her know you have either made your purchase (have order number from receipt ready) or that you are ready to make your purchase & schedule your consult.

3. Send in your IEP via fax (508) 302-1273 at least 48 hours before your appt so Catherine can review.

Be sure to include a cover page with your IEP that lists your name, contact information & top 3 education concerns.

The $125 fee for an IEP mini-consult will only be available for Feb 2010.

Let’s work together now to assure your child has a great ending to the school year or maybe you’re already looking into the fall!

Often I receive a call from a parent who has a child in special education who says: “I don’t want to be THAT Mom”. What is THAT mom?

It’s the Mom that is demanding on every detail in their child’s education. She needs to know what is happening every minute of every day and wants it documented in writing. She doesn’t give the team any room to be creative because she knows what works and what doesn’t. She is the bully. She scares the team and often never receives the full truth because the team is fearful of her reaction. Emails and phone calls are carefully crafted when communicating with THAT Mom because slipping up would mean big trouble.

The fear of being “THAT” mom stops many from being “THE Mom”. Who is THE mom?

It’s THE Mom that is involved in her child’s education. The mom that can praise when a good job is done and offer constructive help when needed. The mom that trusts the team, but doesn’t live in denial of what needs to be done to assure her child is educated. Most of all THE Mom is an equal part of the IEP team and lets everyone know where her role is without telling other people how to do their job. The Mom can be frustrating to the team sometimes because she asks a lot of questions, but her demeanor is so great that you almost can’t get mad at her because you can tell her efforts are out of love. THE mom is not a wimp, but a team player. THE Mom is not a bully, yet can take charge when needed.

Don’t let the fear of being That Mom take away from your ability to be The Mom!

Which Mom are you right now? THAT Mom or THE Mom?

HINT: No matter where you are now, you can take action to move towards being the type of advocate you want to be for your child.

P.S. Sorry Dad’s…there are more Moms than Dads in our audience, but you too can figure out if your THAT Dad or THE Dad! If you are not THAT Dad or THE Dad, but let Mom take care of the family job on the IEP team…it may be time to create your role.

We all know that Omega’s are all over the news for improving brain health. How about an Organic, Gluten Free Chewable Omega that actually tastes good! Triple distilled to assure no heavy metals, pesticides or carcinogens are included, this little orange burst of flavor is pleasing to the taste buds and proven healthy for brain development. Did you know a large percentage of kids with attention/behavior concerns were found to have low levels of Omega’s in their system?

STRATEGY: Be Selfish for a Moment for Your Child in Special Education

It’s the middle of the school year, not quite the IEP season rush, but my phone is starting to ring consistently asking for special education advocacy help. Do you know who is calling? The parents who are the most involved. Not the most involved with their child, but the most involved in special education issues. Are you the parent who is trying to change the special education district program to fit not only your child’s needs, but you know it will help other student’s too?

Are you the parent who is attending the PTO meetings looking to see how you can help the organization change special education habits or policies because you are confident it will trickle down to your child eventually. (Hint: Eventually is too late.)

Are you the parent who is out educating other parents on how parental rights work because you know if you educate just a few more (hundred) parents you can all ban together for change?

Let’s take a reality check. Your child needs you to be their advocate first. In real world of special education advocacy, big changes don’t happen often and they do happen to late for the parents who were advocating for the issues.

What’s a better approach?

Keep your focus on your child, your family priorities and working with your special education team on assuring special education services are meeting your child’s needs.

Work on large group issues or district policies less than 25% of your time. Yes, we need help in creating long-term solutions for the district programs as a whole, but your child’s school career is too short to spend a large amount of time on these issues. A lot of people putting in a little bit of effort goes a really long way.

Please continue to educate parents about special education rights, services in your districts and share your positive and negative experiences in special education. Do not spend hours on the phone in these conversations. Those who want the information and help and plan on doing something for their children don’t have hours to spend on the phone with you either.

Bottom Line: If you want to win in the special education game, especially in this economy, it’s most important to keep your focus on the daily success of YOUR child and their program.

_____________________________________________________________________

A Note From Catherine: Why is this such a Timely Issue?

Why is this such a timely topic? Because I’ve had my brother on my mind a lot lately. For those of you who don’t know, my brother is 32 with Down Syndrome. A simply awesome young man who is feeling the effects of a broken system.

I’ve spent my time with parents for the past 15 years focused on preparing their children for the real world. My brother’s “real world” consists of no community job support available, no access to public transportation and no opportunities for furthering his education.

Bottom Line: If you live in Illinois – those things are hard to come by, if you can find them at all.

So in reality, I’ve decided to take my own advice. I will not be trying to fix the system. I will not be attending group rallies. I will not be finding families who want to work with me towards the bigger change in the future.

The time is now to focus on the home-front and put my brother first for more than just a passing moment. With changing focus onto my brother’s quality of life, we have achieved the following.

He owns his own business and is working towards being the first person with Down Syndrome to walk across the corporate stage with recognition from the CEO at Shaklee.

We assisted him in networking the opportunity for commercial cleaning with green products for improved safety of all. He now works in the community 2 days a week at a local therapy office. Thank you BDI Playhouse!

We have advocated for him to retain his job at Walgreens through the down economy. Sure it’s only once a week, but we’ll take it as another positive opportunity out of the home.

Now is not the time to be shy about advocating for your child or your sibling. Our systems are broken and you need to tell people what you need, what your working towards and how you want to be part of the solution first for your family and second for the community at large.

Would you like to help Robert reach his goal of moving forward this month into a business leader position? Your purchases at http://www.robertbagdonas.myshaklee.com will make his dreams come true and give him further independence.

Of course, if you’d like to meet Robert in person so he can explain his business, the products and you can see his success first hand…let me know…I’ve got his number
