Private Therapeutic Day School Placement Obtained at District Expense

Starting Point: Parents of a child diagnosed with Autism lost due process regarding a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) before finding Catherine Whitcher, M.Ed.  They spent over $150,000 in private services, lawyers and consultations.  After visiting a local school for children with Autism, the director of the school suggested they call Catherine.  Desperate and hopeless, the call was made.  Individual advocacy services were obtained.

The Strategy: A six month process of working with Catherine consisted of the 7 Strategies used consistently.  Although the process was not easy and took strong commitment from the family, a solution was found.  Data was systematically collected, communication with staff had a distinct purpose and priorities for the child’s education were established.  By comparing information collected to IDEA standards governing a meaningful education, it was clear a placement change was still desperately needed.

Result: After reviewing data and negotiating all the way up to the district lawyer, outside placement was granted at a private therapeutic day school for ASD.  An Independent Education Evaluation (IEE) will be obtained at school district expense at the end of 15 months and future placement will be determined based on progress.  Together, these 7 Strategies led by Catherine and carried through by parents resulted in the desired outcome which nobody had been able to achieve before.
